The March meeting of the San Diego Seaside Scrollers was called to order at the Allied Gardens Community Park Senior Center at approximately 9:35 a.m. by President, Jim Fisher, Saturday, 15 March 2008, with a group of 38 members and guests present.New member David Peden was introduced, as was guest Scott Webber.Returning members Bonnie and Roger Brown have rejoined us and two new members have also joined since the last meeting, one from the event at Rocklers, and one from the San Diego Fine Woodworkers Association, which brings our total membership to 66 for 2008.
The meeting began with our program, Jim Anderson from Anderson International Trading, Inc., in Anaheim.Jim brought several samples of items made from their special plywood, and explained much about the plywood business.For more information about the plywood from Anderson International Trading, go to their website at http://www.aitwood.com.
President Jim Fisher reminded everyone of the coming attractions of interest to scrollers in the San Diegoarea.Two events that have already passed included the 4th Saturday in March Toy Program event at Allied Gardens and the scrolling demonstration at Rockler woodworking store on 29 March.Still to come are the Allied Gardens SpringFest on Saturday, 3 May 2008, the Boy Scouts “Fun with Sons” at BalboaPark, also on Saturday 3 May 2008.The “Design in Wood Show” at the San Diego County Fair will begin Saturday, 14 June 2008, and run through Sunday, 6 July 2008.
Ricky Brown, our new Program Chairman, handed out suggestion slips to be completed and returned to him with suggestions and/or requests for future meeting programs.If you have a program you would like to see at a meeting, let Ricky know.
Jemima Thomas, Toy Program Coordinator, announced that she has toy patterns and wood for anyone interested in making toys, cars, puzzles, etc., for the Toy Program.
Don Lester had the sign-up sheets for both the Allied Gardens SpringFest and the “Design in Wood Show” at the San Diego County Fair.The scrollsaw booth at the “Design in Wood Show” will be manned from 10:00 a.m., to 2 p.m., and from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., with three people per shift.One person will work the velocipede and the others will work the electric scrollsaw and greet the public as a “Scrollsaw Ambassador.”The rules for the scrollsaw demonstration booth are simple, no eating or drinking, except for water, and absolutely no selling of your work out of the booth.Remember, each shift should clean the booth area after their shift.
On 4th Saturday in May, 24 May 2008, a special workshop will be held at the Allied Gardens Community Center to exchange patterns that can be cut at the San Diego County Fair “Design in Wood Show.”We will also review booth etiquette at the show and how to operate and change blades on the velocipede.
A silent auction was conducted for the two scrollsaws donated to the club by Mrs. Ginther, Ed Ginther’s widow.Bill Goldschneider and Karen Kaminski won those two saws.Karen donated her scrollsaw back to the club to be used at various club functions.Thank you Karen.
A vote was taken regarding the blades and blade holder which were also donated to the club by Mrs. Ginther.Those blades and blade holder will be used for demonstrations and the Toy Program.
Show-N-Tell Table:Another great month at the Show-N-Tell table.
Linda Romatko had a Maple box with a wood twig handle. She also showed us pictures of her new workshop shed.
Jorge Parada displayed two mural style Intarsia pictures, one of a fish swimming in kelp and a second one of “Back Yard Dragons.” He also had a fish puzzle.
Bill Goldschneider brought three fretwork music boxes, a carousel, a nativity scene, and a cathedral steeple.His works were created using different kinds of wood, Maple, Walnut, and Cherry.
Millie Wilson had two letter openers, one from Walnut and the second from Maple.She said she used a sander to give the blades definition.
Mike Riley showed us two 1936 Jaguar cars he had completed, one small one and a larger one.
Wayne Johnson brought in some of the quarters he had cut at a previous 4th Saturday event, and gave away several of the special clamps he designed to hold the coins while cutting.
Roy Vanderhook showed us a Dove puzzle entitled “Fruit of the Spirit Puzzle,” which was a pattern from the March issue of “Creative Woodworks & Crafts.
Raffle:The March raffle was another success, with many happy winners.
4th Saturday in March & April
The 4th Saturday in March brought 24 scrollers together in a workshop that cut many toys, cars, and puzzles.A big well-done is extended to all those who participated in this Toy Program event.The 4th Saturday in April will be a special painting workshop conducted by Fernanda Brown and Mary Lee Lester.Jemima is encouraging anyone who has taken home toys, cars, puzzles, etc., to finish sand and seal to bring them to the regular club meeting on 19 April if you can’t make it to the 4th Saturday event on 26 April 2008.
Allied Gardens SpringFest & Boy Scouts “Fun with Sons”
The Allied Gardens SpringFest and the Boy Scouts “Fun with Sons” at the BalboaParkscout facility, CampBalboa, will be held on the same date this year, Saturday, 3 May 2008.We still need volunteers to man the booth at the Allied Gardens SpringFest and Jim Fisher needs volunteers for Camp Balboa Boy Scout event.
